Autonomous Sailing – The Chance for Inland Shipping

A chance to beat the economy of scale in inland shipping with its restrictions as to the size of the vessels and bridge clearance is „autonomous sailing“ says Dr. Johannes Trost at the workshop during the IVR Congress 2018 at Strasbourg. Smaller units could be operated at lower costs and re-vitalise the existing huge network of European inland waterways. How this could practically be realised and what the legal impacts for operators and insurers will be was one of the key issues during this workshop with high profile speakers from The Netherlands, UK and Germany. Dr. Johannes Trost analysed the existing and required legal rules and regimes both in an international context of CMNI and CLNI conventions, the Collision Convention and CEVNI rules as well as locally within the domestic law.
