Ship recycling

LEBUHN & PUCHTA has been involved in many last voyage transactions and advises clients on green ship recycling issues.

Currently, the demolition of vessels falls under rules applicable to waste generally. This is set to change in time. According to the Hong Kong convention, ships are to be recycled at certified specialist ship recycling facilities. Although the Hong Kong convention is not yet in force, the EU Ship Recycling Regulation has already adopted the regime of the Hong Kong convention. Worldwide, arrangements are being made for ship recycling facilities to be certified according to this model.

Properly structured, ship recycling projects can be efficiently carried out in practice according to the applicable rules.

Selected Cases

  • We have acted for clients in the context of notification proceedings under the waste disposal regime for the green recycling outside of the EU of a car carrier following a casualty.
  • We have advised clients in respect of the applicability of waste disposal rules to the sale of a commercial vessel and the withdrawal from service of a passenger vessel.
